Gaibu is a short drive from Recife and accessible by public transport. For this reason, it is popular and less exclusive than neighbouring Calhetas beach. It is also a larger sweeping bay than the more cove-like Calhetas, and the word is that the surf is good. Here there is a bigger infrastructure in terms of bars and shops. The quality is lower than in Calhetas, but so is the price. It also attracts quite a large number of gays and lesbians, like Calhetas. As a consequence it has earned the nickname “Gaybu.”
