A convenient and comfortable staging point for trips to the Delta del Orinoco and the Gran Sabana, Ciudad Guayana is a schizophrenic metropolis encompassing the unlikely twin cities of Puerto Ordaz and San Félix. Puerto Ordaz is a wealthy and modern prefab city, with a large middle-class population and a big choice of restaurant and entertainment options that exist nowhere else in the region. Late-model cars cruise wide boulevards, wending through clusters of air-conditioned malls and gleaming office blocks. Although the streets are remarkably clean, the city feels a bit soulless. San Félix is a working-class city with a historical center, but it is rather frantic and grimy, with little tourist infrastructure and a reputation for being unsafe.
