Situated in the high forests of western Honduras, La Esperanza has the coolest climate of all Honduras' cities. In actuality, La Esperanza and Intibuca are neighboring cities with intertwining boundaries. The town is a central trading place for the Lenca communities who live in the surrounding mountains. Each year, the people of La Esperanza and Intibuca have a potato festival and crown a "Potato Queen."The nearby village of San Juan is known for its coffee production and for its proximity to Erandique home to the ancient fortress of Lempira, an indigenous Honduran hero who fought against the Spanish.
