Opened in 1997, this chain hotel is set across the busy avenue from Isla Verde's sandy beachfront, far enough away to keep costs down but within a leisurely 10-minute walk of the casinos and nightlife. Two towers, with four and five floors, hold the well-maintained, well-furnished, and comfortable bedrooms. There's no restaurant on the premises and no real garden; other than a whirlpool and a swimming pool with a swim-up bar, there are very few facilities or amenities. Day 2 - Visit Fascinating Loiza and Pinones
Loíza was proclaimed a town officially in 1719 and named in honor of Yuisa or Luisa, one of the women caciques on the island when the Spanish conquerors arrived.
Loíza was populated by freed or escaped African slaves during the town's first years. Due to neglect from the government and ineffective mayors, many in Loíza live below poverty as on the rest of the island. One of Loíza's barrios, Loíza aldea, is famous across Puerto Rico because it has been a talent pool for dancers and artisans. Formerly a center for black Puerto Rican music, it is said to be the traditional birthplace of the musical form known as plena along with Ponce. Though "Loíza Aldea" refers to "El Pueblo" or "Downtown Loíza", many across the island refer to it as such as a means of discrimination as aldea means "village" in Spanish. Each year there is a celebration in Loíza where people parade around wearing Máscaras de Vejigante. Máscaras de Vejigante is a type of mask made in Loíza. They are made of coconut, and painted in multiple colors.
Loíza is known as "La Capital de la Tradicion"- "The Capital of Traditions"- for its "bomba" music, traditional Taíno and African dishes, artisanry, and distinct culture. Loíza is home to such celebrities as the "Hermanos Ayala", Samuel Lind, Daniel Lind, DJ Eliel, DJ Tito, La Sista, Abrante, Mangani, etc. and many artists have roots in Loíza like Daddy Yankee (his father is known as El Negro from "Los Hermanos Ayala", Ramon Ayala), Tego Calderon, Don Omar, Lennox from "Zion y Lennox", Mackie from "Mackie y Yaga", Producer Brian Smith and many others. You will observe a greater wealth of beauty than what is waiting for you in the rain forest. According to ancient Indian legend, the good spirit "Yuquiyu" reigned on his mighty mountain top throne, protecting Puerto Rico and its people. Many of the sights you will see today are the same as those that dazzled the first Spanish Explorers more than 500 years ago. You'll see 1,000 year-old trees, strange plants with exotic rainbow colored flowers, and thick vines with great masses of lush red blossoms waving in the cool breeze. The city of Ponce unveils an enchanting portrait of colonial history, art and culture. The architectural splendor and detailed neoclassic and art deco style of the city makes Ponce an essential part in your itinerary. Don't miss the opportunity to visit Ponce, "The Pearl of the South", Puerto Rico's second oldest and largest city. Admissions included.

In 1975, hurricane Eloisa passed near Puerto Rico with torrential rains that caused massive flooding. Don Luis Hernandez, a sugar cane worker and farmer from the Toma Vieja section of Tibes in Ponce, made charcoal as a part-time job. While searching for wood to make for charcoal, he discovered remnants of indigenous cultures that had been buried over time and were uncovered by the flooding.
As he walked through Vega de Tani he saw shells and pieces of "bricks" which prompted him to explore further. He found pieces of bone and shells and ceramic fragments. He felt he had discovered a great secret and he initially kept it to himself. Although he realized that the objects he had discovered belonged to Puerto Rico's Indian past, he never realized that he had discovered one of the most important archeological sites in the Antilles.
One day in 1976, while exploring archeological sites on the island, the Archeological Society of the Southwest arrived in the area of Tibes. While asking questions, they learned of Don Luis' discovery and he took them to Vega de Tani. In surveying the area they realized it was an archeological site with a ball field and a large rectangular area, which turned out to be a large plaza. Duration 8 hours
