Day 3 Chile Puerto Montt
Gateway to the scenic Lake District, a series of fragrant eucalyptus and pine forests, icy lakes, Bavarian hamlets and luminous snowcapped volcanoes. Contact us for shore excursions in Puerto Montt.

Arrival: 08:00 am
Departure: 05:00 pm
Day 4 Chile Darwin Channel, Chilean Fjords
Fjords more spectacular than those in Norway or Alaska? See them here along the southern coastline of Chile...a 1,000-mile maze of virgin-forested islands, glistening glaciers and more fjords than in all of Scandinavia.

Cruising only.
Day 5 Chile Amalia Glacier, Canal Sarmiento
The west side of the Sarmiento Canal is flanked by Madre de Dios Island, with towering limestone peaks. Amalia Glacier is blue and white, and home to penguins and seabirds. Cruising only.
Day 6 Chile Strait of Magellan
Where the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans converge, the Straight of Magellan lies along the southern edge of South America and was named by Ferdinand Magellan around 1520. The strait, protected by both the mainland and the islands of the Tierra Del Fuego archipelago, was considered safer than Cape Horn or Drake Passage. Views of Chile from the strait include stunning vistas and landscapes, tiny coves and picturesque inlets. Cruising only.
Day 5 Chile Punta Arenas
This remote town, pioneered by Yugoslav settlers and sheep ranchers, sits on rolling hills overlooking the Strait of Magellan.

Arrival: 06:00 am
Departure: 09:00 pm
Day 6 Chile Cockburn and Beagle Channels
Charted by Charles Darwin on his exploratory cruise in 1832, these are two of the most vital channels in the Tierra del Fuego archipelago. At 150 miles long, the Beagle Channel separates the main island in the north from the small islands in the south. The Cockburn Channel offers breathtaking views of Romanche, Alemania, Francia and Italia glaciers. Cruising only.
Day 7 Argentina Ushuaia
The southernmost town in the world, where dominating peaks loom on three sides; the fourth opens to the Beagle Channel, where sea lions bellow and king crab rules.

Arrival: 01:00 pm
Departure: 07:00 pm
Day 8 Chile Cape Horn and Drake Passage
Cape Horn marks the southernmost point of South America. The cape's steep and rocky cliffs rise up and extend into Drake Passage, where the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans meet. Ancient mariners dreaded rounding the Cape because of its reputation for bad weather. Cruising only.
Day 9 Argentina Wilhelm Archipelago
Anvers Island (Palmer Station), Cuverville Island, Petermann Island

Skirt jagged ice cliffs to Anvers Island, home of the U.S. Biological Research Center, Palmer Station. (Perhaps we can entice the scientists to come aboard the ms Veendam to share their findings.) Next: the wide cobbled beaches of Cuverville Island, home to Antarctica's extensive colony of gentoo penguins. And Petermann Island, where French explorer/scientist Dr. Jean-Baptiste Charcot studied a colony of Adélie penguins during the winter of 1909. Cruising only.
Day 10 Argentina South Shetland Island
Deception, Livingston & Half Moon Islands (Scenic Cruising)

Don't be deceived: Deception Island is really the crescent-shaped caldera of a volcano active enough to heat Antarctic waters to bathwater temperatures. The ms Rotterdam will sail right by the crater, where several colonies of chinstrap penguins make their home on the black-sand beaches. More surprises await at Half Moon Island where whales are often seen patrolling the shores; and Livingston Island, home of huge elephant seals. Cruising only.
Day 11 Argentina The Antarctic Sound
Hope Bay (Esperanza Station), Paulet & Elephant Islands (Scenic Cruising)

At Hope Bay the scarlet chalets of Esperanza, an Argentine military and scientific station, stand in stark contrast to the white ice. On Paulet Island as several million Adélie penguins nest on every available beach. And at Elephant Island, hear the riveting account of Shackelton s ill-fated expedition and the crew s heroic daily struggle to survive. Cruising only.
Day 12
At sea.
Day 13 Argentina Pt. Stanley, Falkland Island
Scotland under the Southern Cross: moorlands, pubs, red phone booths, sheep ranches, a "cuppa tea." Plus penguins of every type: gentoo, Magellanic, king.

Arrival: 07:00 am
Departure: 01:00 pm
Day 14
At sea.
Day 15
At sea.
Day 16 Argentina Buenos Aires
In the "Paris of South America," find ten million portenos passionate about futbol, tango and theater at midnight. A short flight away, Iguazu Falls roars in the jungle.

Arrival: 06:00 am
Departure: 09:00 pm
Day 17 Uruguay Montevideo
Friendly and genteel, Montevideo honors colonial customs: long lunches, siestas, high tea. Nearby: Colonia del Sacramento, the oldest city in Uruguay (ca. 1680) and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Arrival: 08:00 am
Departure: 06:00 pm
Day 18
